I remember when I started out as a freelance copywriter and content writer in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to be honest, I didn’t know that it would turn out to be as my career path and something that I would actually enjoy. I was the shy nerdy finance post-graduate and somehow I ended up exactly where my strength was, writing and working with a marketing team.
Over the years, I created many portfolios to showcase my work. Some work, some didn’t. And as we learn more from our failures, I did too.
One of the top employers of copywriters are the advertising, creative and marketing agencies. And who runs these agencies? That’s right, creative designers and marketing gurus. And they don’t like to see just blank white page with black Calibri font. Try to bring some color and a bit of creativity (take help if you have to).
Usually the decision makers / designers are not interested much in your words. So better to make headlines bold and big and little text. If they are interested, they will only go through the headlines anyways.
When you are starting out, your portfolio is really small. But if you know you have the talent, then take your time and write on your favorite topic. It’s a great way to show employer how you can organize your thoughts. It doesn’t matter if it was done for a client or not.
Chances are that employers will search for you online after you submit your credentials and make sure that he finds something that would surprise him in a good way. Keep your LinkedIn fresh with new copywriting & content samples and keep a friendly tone on all your online presence. Do keep Googling yourself from time to time.
Sure you might face some down time or road blocks but remember that good words were valued from the start of the civilization and will always be. So keep reading, keep learning and don’t waste one moment when ideas hits you. Just type it all away and rest will be fine.
Till next time.
